EDUCATION IN NEW YEAR -2018

(Kind attention Parliament and MPs)
A hundred years ago India had just 10 universities, five at Calcutta, Bombay, Madras, Lahore and Allahabad created by British and another five concived by others at Benares (BHU), Mysore, Osmania , Aligarh ( AMU) and Patna. At independence the number of universities was just 19. Today India is hoping to have ten universities in the State Sector and ten outside, that would match the best in the world. These universities would be thought leaders, exploring the frontiers of knowledge, helping the society become more humane and prosperous. This is very much in keeping with the new vision that India has crafted for itself. Of becoming a world leader in every sense of the term. The new vision revolves around two very achievable objectives as far as higher education is concerned. One involves increasing the number of persons who take to higher education.
The other concerns nudging the nation towards becoming a knowledge economy. India is a country that has shown consistent growth in knowledge and skill intensive sectors whether it be information technology, data analytics or engineering.
The challenge is to take these skills into all realms of learning. Universities like Panjab University which traces it's legacy to University at Lahore, with their multi-faculty expertise, are well placed to take a lead role in this enterprise to build the Human Resources needed for a resurgent India in the 21st century.
