Lok Sabha Polls 2019: Over 64% Polling in Phase IV

Polling done and dusted for 72 Lok Sabha seats in 9 states in the fourth phase of general elections; this round sees over 64 % turnout reflecting enthusiasm among voters despite rising mercury; West Bengal witnesses 76% voting; Polling remains largely peaceful except for some clashes; BJP & TMC complain against each-other to the Election Commission.

Be it women or men, youth or elderly, everyone wants to have their say in the largest democratic exercise in the world, queueing up in large numbers to exercise their franchise since the morning.

Voting for 72 of the Lok Sabha's 543 seats began at 7 in the morning and except for certain sensitive areas, polling wound up by 6 pm. Although due to long queues at closing time in several places voting period also went beyond the stipulated time.

The 72 Lok Sabha seats which saw polling in phase 4 are spread over 9 states.12.80 crore voters determined the fate of 961 candidates in this phase. Fool proof arrangements were made to ensure free and fair voting. Apart from lakhs of polling staff, both central and state police personnel were deployed to ensure polling remains incident free. Phase 4 included 17 Lok Sabha seats from Maharashtra where voting largely remained peaceful. Voting has now taken place in all 48 seats in the state.

Phase 4 has also witnessed elections taking place on 13 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh. These are Shahjahanpur, Khiri, Hardoi, Misrikh, Unnao, Farrukhabad, Etawah, Kannauj, Kanpur, Akbarpur, Jalaun, Jhansi & Hamirpur. Voters came out in large numbers and queued up despite the mercury crossing 40 degrees celcius during the day.

13 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in Rajasthan also polled in Phase 4 in a peaceful manner. The searing heat of the desert state proving no detterant for voters.

Phase 4 also witnessed voting take place on 8 among 42 seats in West Bengal. Like all previous phases, incidents of violence were reported in this phase as well. In Asansol's Barabani, a clash broke out between Trinamool and BJP supporters at a polling station. BJP candidate and Union Minister Babul Supriyo's car was also damaged.

Polling also took place in phase 4 on 6 Lok Sabha seats each in Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. While Madhya Pradesh voted in its first phase on Monday, it was 4th and last phase in Odisha's case where polling was also conducted for 41 of its 147 assembly seats.

5 Lok Sabha seats also went to the hustings in Bihar in the fourth phase. In the case of neighbouring Jharkhand, it was 3 seats where polling was concluded largely peacefully.

Monday also saw voting taking place in a part of the Anantnag seat in Jammu & Kashmir. Polling for this seat has been split over 3 phases for security reasons and now one more phase is left. Extensive security arrangements had been made to ensure free & fair elections in Anantnag without any shadow of fear.

Among the prominent candidates who's fates have been sealed in EVMs in the 4th phase are Union Ministers Giriraj Singh, Subhash Bhamre, S S Ahluwalia, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat & Babul Supriyo..Congress leaders Salman Khurshid, Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, Sriprakash Jaiswal, Milind Deora, Urmila Matondkar, and Priya Dutt..CPI's Kanahiya Kumar, Samajwadi Party's Dimple Yadav, NCP's Parth Pawar, Trinamool's Shatabdi Roy & RLSP's Upendra Kushwaha have also been consigned to the verdict awaited category.

After Phase 4, polling has wound up for 374 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats. 3 more rounds of the general elections remain till the all important counting day of the 23rd of May.
