Voting concludes for phase V of Lok Sabha polls

NEW DELHI.Polling concludes for the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections in 51 constituencies spread over seven states, amidst tight security on Monday.

Seven states voted in the fifth phase. 8 crore 75 Lakh voters were registered to vote. All preparations were in place to ensure free and fair polling. Lakhs of people associated with the administrative machinery as well as security forces played a key role in this.

Talking first of the politically important state of Uttar Pradesh, 14 key seats went to polls. These include Dharuhera, Sitapur, Mohanlalganj, Banda, Fatehpur, Kaushambi, Bahraich, Lucknow, Amethi and Rae Barelli.

In Rajasthan, 12 seats polled. Voter enthusiasm was visible despite the searing heat.

7 seats voted in West Bengal. Some instances of violence were reported in the state. BJP's Barrackpore candidate alleged that he was attacked by TMC workers when he visited a polling booth amid reports of BJP polling agents being chased away from polling stations. The election Commission has sought a report on the matter.

Incidents of violence were also reported from Bangaon and Hooghly too. Polling was stopped in Hooghly and the electoral officer was removed. A delegation of BJP leaders complained to the Election Commission about the violence in the state.

7 seats in MP voted in the fifth phase. This is the second phase of polling in MP.

In Bihar too 5 seats went to polls including Sitamarhi, Madhubani and Saran. In neighbouring Jharkhand 4 seats polled including Koderma, Ranchi, Khunti and Hazaribagh.

In Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Anantnag went to polls. Due to security reasons, Anantnag polled in 3 phases.

The key players whose fate has been decided in the 5th phase include Rajnath Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Union Ministers Smriti Irani, Rajyavardhan Rathore, Jayant Sinha, Rajeev Pratap Rudy, LJP's Pashupati Paras Paswan and TMC's Dinesh Trivedi.

Voting is now complete across 424 seats. Across all 5 phases, voter enthusiasm has been visible and now all eyes are on counting day on 23rd May.(UPDATED ON MAY 6TH, 2019)
