GST was a great radical reform: Surabmanian
Hyderabad, Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian on Friday said that Goods and Services Tax (GST) was a great radical reform which was intended to increase voluntary compliance with tax laws.
"This also a novel cooperative federalism exercise whereby the Centre and the states of India can work together for the success of the federal spirit of constitution of India," he said.
In a lecture on “Economic Policy Making in the Government”, organised by ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education (IFHE), here, Dr Surabmanian discussed the role of Chief Economic Adviser in publishing Economic Survey of India and added that portions of it should form curriculum inputs in higher education.
He highlighted the unique position India occupies in development studies. According to him, India achieved political development at the time of independence when it was still grappling with poverty. Redistribution of income therefore was important to redress the problems of mass poverty and inequality. “ This is the reason why Indian growth policies need to accommodate such measures as subsidies”, Dr Surabmanian added.
“Universal Basic Income scheme is this alternative being thought about which will be a direct means of providing purchasing power for sustenance. The mechanism for this is through linking Jandhan bank accounts with Aadhaar & mobile numbers. This linkage is expected to be a better & more foolproof method for targeting the poor for effective income redistribution.” he said.(Updated on November 24th, 2017)
