Nation remembers its freedom fighters on 76th anniversary of Quit India Day

NEW DELHI. On 76th anniversary of Quit India Day, President and Prime Minister remember the countless soldiers of liberty who sacrificed their all for India's Independence. Freedom fighters honoured ar At-Home reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Prime Minster shared pages with historical insights on Quit India movement on twitter.

The Quit India Movement also known as Bharat Chodo Andolan was launched at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) after Mahatma Gandhi gave the call of 'Do or Die' on August 8, 1942.

The protest was initiated to demand an end to the British rule in India.Since the movement was held in August it is also known as August Kranti or August Movement.The movement was started on August 9, 1942, and since then the day is celebrated as August Kranti Day.The day is celebrated by paying tribute to freedom fighters with national integration speeches and other events.

To commemmorate the 76th anniversary of quit India Movement, various programmes were organised across the nation. President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted saying, "On 76th anniversary of Quit India Day, we gratefully remember the countless soldiers of liberty who sacrificed their all for our Independence. Looking forward to hosting our freedom fighters at an At-Home reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan this evening."

Prime minister Narendra Modi also remembered the greats who took part in the Quit India Movement.

He also shared some fascinating nuggets of history relating to the Quit India Movement from the National Archives.

First among them was A poem on Quit India by Atal Bihari Vajpayee published in 1946 in 'Abhyudaya' a newspaper associated with Madan Mohan Malaviya.

In another tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared Pages from a report filed by the colonial administrators show how through the Quit India Movement, Bapu shook the foundations of colonial rule and accelerated India's journey towards freedom.

Notings on a speech made by MK Gandhi at the Meeting of the All India Congress Committee on 08-08-42 referred to his call for Do or die as "It does not read well."

Mahatma Gandhi's clarion call galvanised the nation. Another image from the National Archives shared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi shows another official report indicating the spread of the Quit India movement and the wide-scale participation.
